Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System 1 (K-2)

This two-day offering provides professional development on how to administer, score, and analyze the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System. Through demonstration, guided practice, and discussion, teachers learn how to:

 

  • Administer, code, and score oral reading behavior
  • Conduct a standardized comprehension conversation
  • Determine independent, instructional, and placement levels for readers using the Fountas & Pinnell A-N Text Gradient
  • Analyze a child’s reading performance, including reading comprehension, reading rate, and word analysis to assess the reader’s current processing system
  • Assess reading fluency using the assessment rubric
  • Determine the instructional implications for whole-group, small-group and individualized instruction using assessment results and the Fountas & Pinnell Literacy Continuum, Expanded Edition
  • Utilize the Online Data Management System for online record keepingRequired Materials: Fountas, I.C. and Pinnell, G.S. (2017). Benchmark Assessment System 1, Second or Third Edition, Grades K-2, Levels A-N. Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann.
  • Note: The training focuses on Benchmark Assessment System 1, Third Edition. This updated version includes revisions to the comprehension conversation and a new scoring rubric, among other changes. Participants can continue to use the Second Edition of the systems, however, the training will introduce the new scoring rubric and revised comprehension conversation. Districts currently using the Second Edition can purchase a conversion system for the Third Edition from Heinemann if they choose to update to the new system. Check the Heinemann website for more information on the Third Edition. All participants must have a kit for the workshop
